Villa Friekens is a squat in the north of Amsterdam. It’s been squatted since may 2002. We work and live here with a group of around 25 people. The building used to be a factory, on the site are a big warehouse, an old cantina and an office building. The warehouse is being used as a working space: a garage, studios (sound and art), circus training space, concert room and a t-shirt printing studio. The cantina we use as a communal kitchen and guestroom. The office building is in use as livingspace, and people also live outside in wagons. The site is sold to the BAM in july 2006. The BAM is one of the biggest construction companies in The Netherlands. They want to demolish Villa Friekens and build 64 residences. Because none of the plans are really clear yet and solution of the ground contamination is still an issue, we don’t know yet when we’ll be evicted. We are busy with lawyers and are in good contact with some of the neighbors. We're streaming this event live from Villa Friekens.
